Hi All! It is almost the weekend, YEAH!! I am trying to figure out how to do the beautiful iridescent fairy wings. I have some iridescent cellophane and have tried ironing it to a wire armature, but it does not look right. I tried to ask an artist not in the Guild once and was told it was a secret. Any ideas on how to get those beautiful wings. Thanks so much!

Oh, boy is this a long one. First, you could get a back issue of Faerie Magazine August 06 (no affiliation) - that mag. has Patricia Rose's methods in it. Basically, you glue the iridescent cello to acetate (ink jet transparencies work great), and glue the wire (22 gauge or 24 gauge works well - you can get colored wire in the jewelry supply section of mega chain craft stores (Michaels/ACMoore, etc) to the edge. If you want really cool wings, print out bug or butterfly wings on the transparencies first, then use a spray adhesive on the reverse side of the transparency to glue the cello to it. I generally use liquid sculpey or fimo decorating gel to add texture, and to affix the wire to the wing edge. Carefully use an embossing gun to cure the LS or FDG, making sure you don't burn the wings (or your fingers). The cello might bubble and/or shrink from the heat; that's ok - it can make some pretty cool effects. I also use a little Pearlex along the wire edge - it adds sparkle and helps to hide any ugliness from excess LS or glue from attaching the wire. Cut out the wings after you've done all the above. I usually print two or three sets of wings on one transparency sheet (but that depends on the size of the wings, i guess), and I make all of the sets at once. Hope this helps, and have fun! Bev

Great ideas! I also like making fairy wings with 24 gauge wire and painting in between the wire with Gallery Glass. One of the nice thing about Gallery Glass is that it comes in dozens of colors. You may purchas it at Michaels.

Please, share your tutorial with the forum. It is so kind of all of you to help one another. Sharing is what makes our industry so great. When we share we all benifit, when we keep secrets we die without anyone knowing anything about us. My goal is to pass my legacy on to my sons and to my artist friends around the world and keep doll making alive for ever. Thanks for sharing.

Hi guys, I'm working on a new technic using electronics and no motors for movements. If everything goes well I'll be exibiting this new piece at the orlando show for everyone to see!!! Once I master the electronic design it will be available for purchase, but at the moment I'm still taking the experimental stages into what will be, hopefully something different in the OOAK doll world. Regeards, Joe MacPhale PS: this is just the tip of the Iceburg...LOL

Your idea of making a machanical armature is a sound idea. You must contact Bill Nelson and asked him about his machanical armatures that he made in the 90's. His were remote control armatures that would turn the head and wave at the crowd. They were a great hit at the Toy Fair in NYC. Bill will be able to save you a great deal of time in developement. Great idea, keep going.

If you wish, I will put a photo of it in our Gallery section. If you have fairies with different style wings send them to me and I will put them on our web site Gallery.

Joe is a master at sculpting and model making. His doll is wonderful, the wings are very exciting, but you should see the vignette he made to go with the doll. It is large, probably 48 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. I will have photos of it to put in out Gallery soon. I've asked Joe to send me a proper photograph to share with our artist friends. If you have specific questions about the way Joe made his wings and vignette you may post here. I'm sure he will be answering the posts very soon.
