The least expensive way to make eyes is to make a press mold out of ProSculpt clay and different sized eyes or marbles. Once you have made the press mold you should over cure it to 325 degrees. That will make it unbreakable (even though it will change the color). Now, put fresh ProSculpt into the rounded holes left from the half marble impressions. Press the clay into the hole and trim off the half you don't want to keep. Now, take the eyes out of the mold and put them in the oven for 10 minutes at 275 degrees. I recommend using our light ProSculpt for the basic white of the eye. It is off white and is perfect for the claris color. Now, paint the dark colors of the iris first and work out to the lightest color. Let the eyes dry between color applications. Then paint in the pupil with a heavy dot of black paint to show some dimension. You may now paint the eye with Gallery Glass made by Plaid. You may purchase it at Michaels. The advantage of painting eyes is that you can make the iris the exact size you want for the doll. If you make the back of the eye with a 20% plain to it you can turn the eyes in the head and they will be perfect for looking to one side or the other. Hi Mr. Johnston, I am fairly new at sculpting-so please excuse what might seem like a silly question to you. I was wondering how you remove the eyes from the mold. I've tried making a mold before, firing it hard, but then found when I filled the hole with fresh clay I couldn't easily remove the clay eye without distorting the eye. Is there a trick to getting the eye out of the mold? It sounds like such a great idea, I'd really like to learn how. Thanks for your advice.--Terry

Thanks for your question. That is a very good question, and there are two simple answers. First, if you put just a slight amount of baby powder in the mold and then put in the eyes they will come right out. The problem with that is that you will have to clean the powder off of the eyes, and that can be troublesome. The other solution is to put the fresh clay in the mold and then put the entire mold in the refrigerator and let it get cold, then you can remove the eyes without distorting or damaging them. Once you have them out of the mold you may put them on a plate, flat side down and cure them in the oven at 275 degrees for ten minutes. When they come out of the oven you can through them in ice water to cool them off. Then dry them off and paint them. Let me know how you like this method. Jack

Oh WoW! What a great idea! I certainly would not have thought of that. I will definitely try the refrigerator method and let you know how it works for me. Thank you sooo much for answering my question.
