Hello all, I am really new to sculpting. I have been looking at different sites and can't believe the wonderful work out there. I'm hoping to give it a try.
Now to my question. I started last night. I was trying to make a six inch fairy. I started with the head, wanting to know how that would look like. As I started and restarted several times I started to learn a few tricks. I had a couple going really well until I noticed the side profile. I really like the nose and the mouth, even the chin looks decent. As I look though, I noticed that the forehead is too fair back. The nose and chin/mouth is out farther that the forehead. Too far. It looks almost like the cave people pictures you see. I've tried adding clay to the forehead but that just messes everything else up. I've tried changing the shape of the head that I start with to no avail. I guess it is how I'm working my clay as I build on the nose and mouth/chin. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've restarted about ten different times with the same results. Can anyone suggest anything. Thanks for any help with this.
Sorry that I'm so long winded. I hope this all makes sense. If you have any questions please let me know.
Thank you.

The best suggestion I can give you is to purchase one of my books or DVD's, or one of the others made by another instructor. We have all been through what you are experiencing and we have learned methods to avoid the problems you are having. Over the past 19 years I've found some things that you should do and some that you shouldn't do. My book on making Artdolls or my DVD on making Artdolls would answer all of your questions. Go to the catalog section of this website and chose the book that fits your needs. Once you have read the book and watched the DVD you will have a complete new set of questions. I offer free technical service on our 800-290-9998 line. You may also want to click on our Gallery and explore some of the artists that have taken some of my coursers. Good luck, Jack

John, I have read Jack's book and watched his DVD on creating an art doll, and I have taken his classes, and my advice (for what it is worth) is to take Jack's DVD and let it walk you through sculpting the head. You will find answers to questions you didn't even know you had if you will follow it step by step. Then I would find out where Jack is teaching a class close to you and sign up for it. You will become a whole different person (sculptor) by doing so.

Hi John, I've used Jack's video, have one of his books, and have taken two of his classes. I highly recommend all three if you can do this. The books are invaluable and the video is wonderful, but that hand's on approach will help you tremendously. Because you're trying to sculpt 6" minis, you don't use a foil head like Jack's method. I think you're experiencing the same problem I did when making the faces. one important thing to remember is you must push the clay back slightly and gently on the sides of the face. I was getting my faces too far forward from the nose down exactly this same way until I started pushing the clay back away from the face. You must be careful though because it's easy to lose the entire face. I've also used Jack's 3-in-1 tool to smooth the clay back under the cheekbones and it works wonderfully! I highly recommend learning on Jack's size artdoll before doing the minis. Don't give up though. Just keep practicing. I'm still learning but am very proud of how far I've come in such a short time and with such little practice time that I have. Wish you lots of luck and, more importantly, fun while you're continuing to learn.
